Lesson week: One 1st-4th 2015-2016 School Year

Our first day of school for the fall will be Sept 7th-11th

This is our complete first week-being a four day week and 30 min Friday morning:
Subjects included are: Geography, Spanish, French, Language Arts, Math, Science and Good Citizenship and memorization/copy work.

Monday:

Good Citizenship
Note: one of the few Texas homeschool requirements
10 min

1) Recite secular Pledge of Allegiance. 
2) Learn the song Texas Our Texas


US Geography:
15 min
Skills This week: Review continents by size, review and learn US map, learn Texas facts. 

1) Using laminated world outline maps, say this rhyme while circling the continents, then name and circle the 4 oceans: (1 minute) 
Rhyme: Asia, Africa, North and South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. 
4 oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic

2) Using laminated outline maps, learn and draw the states names with dry erase markers. (5 minutes)

3) Children will learn and chant Texas Facts. Teacher will pull out posters from a file folder of Texas where applicable for visual reference for the children. 
Learn and chant facts a few times. Have them point to areas on the map where appropriate or recognize posters. Be sure to have them point to bordering states, countries and bodies of water as well.

Major Industries - petroleum and natural gas, farming (cotton, livestock), steel, banking, insurance, tourism

Note: We are spending more time learning about Texas, because we happen to live here. :) Here is the actual lapbook we will end up making over this year, but I'm going to do my own thing first. 


Math: 
1 hour

Skills this week. Review skip counting by 2's, 5's, 10's. number words, tally marks, odd/even, addition, subtraction, multiplication, telling time with analog and digital clocks. 

1) Review skip counting by 2,'s 5,'s, 10's. Students will write with dry erase marker on their personal boards as we recite these together . (3 min) 

2) As a class, we will do one addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problem--single digits. For addition and subtraction children can use bear counters to solve. For multiplication, they can solve by making groups, by adding bears into mini cups (mini cups are the groups) For division, they solve by figuring out what is the dividend---that is represented by paper plates with wide mouths drawn on and eyes for hungry people. Then they figure out the divisor( or number of objects to be divided represented by bears) They then try to give each hungry person an equal amount to find the answer. Be sure to call each answer by it's correct term found here  (10 minutes)

3)New skill: Practice writing numbers. These sheets are laminated and we use dry erase markers. I like these because we can review tally marks again. I also ask them if it's an odd or even number. Worksheet 1, Worksheet 2 (10 min) 

4) Main skill: Telling time.
 a. introduce equivalent time anchor chart made on poster board: 
Equivalent Units of Time Chart 
60 seconds = 1 minute 60 minutes = 1 hour 24 hours = 1 day 7 days = 1 week 12 months = 1 year 52 weeks = 1 year 365 days = 1 year 
 b. Now allow kids to open a first day of school present, a watch for each of them. Tell them if we work hard, they will be able to use their watches to tell the time. Show them the classroom analog and digital clock. 
d. Practice time to the hour, using classroom clock, Children complete Telling Time To The Hour worksheet. (25 minutes) 

Spanish:

Reading/ writing: Amelia, Amelia, Amelia-unit. Children will do character studies of these three very different Amelia's and how the setting and circumstances make them different and the same. 
Grammar: Idioms, Adjectives, homonyms 
 Note: Amelia Bedelia will feature a lot this year, including a reader theater play the kids will perform. 

Spelling/Phonics review
1) Show Spelling rule poster for Compound words.
a. Words are sunlight, baseball, bedtime, downtown, backpack, anything, everyday, somewhere. Bonus homonym. aunt, ant.
b. Copy spelling words into spelling notebook. 
c. Using spelling words, let everyone practice drawing a line through the compound words on the whiteboard. (10 min) 

 2) Examine the word 'sunlight'. First break it down for students. sun plus light is sunlight. Sunlight is a long i word. on the board write three lines i y igh.
 a. show the video on igh.

3) Examine the word backpack. First break it down for students. back plus pack is backpack. Backpack uses the ck blend. Write ck on the board.
 a. show the video on ck blend

4) Examine the word anything. First break it down for students. Any plus thing is anything. Anything uses the th blend. Write th on the board.

5) Examine the word somewhere. First break it down for students. some plus where is somewhere. Somewhere uses the wh blend. Write wh on the board.

Reading/ Grammar/writing
1) Show the cover of Amelia Bedelia; ask the following questions.
a. What is the title of the book?
b. Who is the author of the book? 
c. Ask to describe the book and predict what it is about. 

2) Read the book through with no input or interruption. 

3) Show the Idioms Anchor Chart to explain figurative language. (save anchor charts by keeping flat. I stick them behind a bookshelf, unseen) 
a. On the white board/chalk board make three columns-Idioms Expressions (example: dress the chicken)-What Amelia Bedelia Did-What Amelia Should Have Done.
b. Go through the book and allow children to pick out the idioms, and list them on the board, insuring they understand the concept of what should have happened. (25 min)

There should be time left over since I allow an hour 1/2 for this class since we often play grammar games, cut, glue and other fun stuff. Today, I will end the class though if there is time by reading, Amelia Bedelia's First Day of School. 

Science

Skills this week: six week unit-Blood, guts and bones. Human Anatomy. Smell and Taste. 
Note: This unit could take longer than six weeks. I will update this as I go. Following every days units, will be ideas and extra assignments since my 8th grader expressed an interest in this. 
Materials needed: books-links in lesson plans, as well as posters. 

1) Read the quote on white board: “Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science” ~Edwin Powell Hubble."  Teacher explains that "Today, we begin our first science class exploring and learning using our five senses. We will remind ourselves to do this all year long to make the most of our science class. Our first unit will be called Blood, guts and Bones We will learn about Human Anatomy, which is the study of how our bodies work. We will start with learning about our 5 senses. 
a. Point to our free 5 senses posters for younger kids, and the ones for older students.  Give them an opportunity to look them over. 

2) Teachers: Prepare in advance by reading the parent book Chapter 21-Day 1 of the FREE Science book By Mr. Q. I am using Unit 6. Main Website here.
a. Read the student edition Chapter 21. 
b. Younger students complete page 212 of the student book.
c. Older students complete page 210 and 211, as well as copy the definitions in the parent book on page 235. 

3) Additional Reading. Read the article Cool Jobs: Scents of science . 
Memorization/copywork
Note: It's exactly what it sounds like. This is for subjects I find it important for my children to memorize, to enhance their education. Sometimes it is just memorization and sometimes it's copy work to help with the process.

a. memorize atomic numbers 1,2,3, and 4. Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium and Beryllium. Learn atomic number, element symbol and element name.

 d. Using the clocks on the blog teachwithme.com print out the hour and minute hand from page one, and the clock from page 3. Have students cut out and paste to paper plate-secure hands with a brad. Then, using red markers, count by 5's. Using a blue marker, in smaller print add the one's. 
 e. Call out a few practice times for their craft clocks, then see if anyone can tell the time on their wristwatches. 

Spanish:

2) Show the Idioms Anchor Chart to explain figurative language.
 b. Follow the directions on Get In The Fold, for making idiom books using the idioms found in the book. Everyone chooses a different one. Save these to make one large idiom book to use through the year. (if you have one child, just have them make one, it will still be big when finished) 

3) Children will color, cut out, and paste Amelia onto construction paper. 
a Review Adjectives anchor chart, then have them brainstorm and write adjectives in marker on the construction paper. (save to compare to other Amelia's) (55 min)

d. Tell children. "To tell the time to the minute, follow these steps. First, determine the hour. Next, to figure out the minutes. If the number is between  12 and 5, we count by 1's. For example: if the hour hand is on the larger 5, the hour is 5.  If the minute hand is on 4, the time is 5:04. Example. If the hour hand is on the big 12, the hour is 12. If the minute hand is on 17, we first count by 5's like this 5, 10, 15...then we count by 1's...16, 17. 
e. Using craft clocks, make up several more times to figure out, then ask what time is on everyone's wrist watch. 
f. Using the clocks from teachwithme.com. Write three digital times on the white board. Students will use page 25 to fill in the answers. They can use their craft clocks to help. (save this worksheet for review next week) 

5) Be sure to ask your child several times "what time is it?" They will be thrilled to figure it out! 

French:

Note: This unit could take longer than six weeks. I will update this as I go. Following every days units, will be ideas and extra assignments since my 8th grader expressed an interest in this.

Memorization/copywork
Note: It's exactly what it sounds like. This is for subjects I find it important for my children to memorize, to enhance their education. Sometimes it is just memorization and sometimes it's copy work to help with the process.

2015-2016 school year notes

So many things to say. First, I'm pre-planning. I will have a senior in high school next year and formed a senior group for him to experience dances, yearbooks and graduations. I need to be ahead! I am ambitious and formed a new local homeschool group along with a six week co-op. So yeah, I'm going to be busy.

A note about this year's lessons, my kids grade levels and how I plan to school:

I have four littles beside my senior and 8th grader. I have a 7 year old 1st grader, 8 *soon to be* 3rd grader, and 2, 9 year old 4th graders this year. However, most of their birthdays would put them in lower grades by public school standards. Sometimes I think I should bring my 9 year old's back to 3rd grade technically. For all of them, this will only be the second year of formal schooling, which is why schooling them together works out great. My youngest has proven to be well ahead of his years, and his motor skills have completely caught up to the rest. He needs the challenge of a higher work level. My 8 and 9 year old's are more sophisticated and quicker to get a concept, but I have found the occasional gap, and so this blend also works great for them. The grade level everyone is working on is around a 2nd-3rd grade level.

 I had two GREAT unschoolers for a very long time in regards to my oldest two. We LOVED unschooling and they were model students for that method. Then things got a little crazy as our family got bigger. Slowly, we eased into a secular Charlotte Mason Method of schooling. It worked great for our needs at the times too. I  very much enjoy some traditional methods that you will find in public school classrooms. I use a mix of all these methods now. I would love to unschool but with six it was getting very chaotic and hard to keep up with interests and who was doing what It cause me way too much anxiety. :)

Our schedule goes something like this:

We school for, four days a week. Our Friday will be at our local homeschool co-op for a Fun-Friday co-op. We will rotate history and science every six weeks. We have school for three weeks, then have a Fourth Fun Week, which is filled with nature studies, music, art, dancing and field trips I want them to take. School usually lasts for us from about 8:am to 12:00 noon. A bit longer for my oldest two.

My posts should contain an entire week of schooling for 1st-4th grade and a complete schedule of what we are doing.

Kindergarten-3rd grade Lesson Plans April 27th-May 1st

 We are back! Not that we ever left. We did 3 weeks of the Choose My Plate unit, followed by 3 weeks of the Garden Detective Unit. I'd say it's decently put together. I only had to correct the grain portion sizes and add in lots of talks about grass fed meats, and buying locally and go over the dirty dozen in organics. The recipe book especially kept them busy. We actually did more cooking than gardening, and more videos about gardening since we entered a rainy season here in Texas. Then, we had about two weeks of nothing but reading, which was way more exciting than free curriculum units. Something just clicked with them all, and everyone went on a reading and writing spree. 


So, back to regular schedule. These next three weeks we will be doing a bit of daily review, mixed in with new. I'm concentrating on adjectives and adverbs in language arts, counting by 2's,  5's, 10's in math, and we are doing a beta in science called Rainforest Journey...that looks like it is still taking beta testers. It's like a textbook that has imbeded videos and reading. They are enjoying the pictures mostly, that are very well done. We won't be doing history for the next three weeks, since we alternate science and history.

5) Kids will complete butterfly--count by 2's poster. The day before I will draw butterflies on poster board. They will write in the numbers to reflect counting from 2 through 40. We will use this during morning review to count by 2's.

6) Take a few minutes to go over the unusual names in the book--let children discuss their names.

7) Go over Vowel and Consonants poster. Using dry erase writing strips, have children write their full names with dry erase markers. Have them identify and circle the vowels in their name. 

 8) Using Elementary Matters blog as a guide--teach syllables. Then, have everyone figure out how many syllables are in their full name. Do the same for the name Chrysanthemum.

 9) Complete Chysanthemum name craft from Wild About Firsties blog. Because it's spring, these will be fun to hang in the house. 

Tuesday:

Math: 
1) Sing doubles rap. Go over addition foldable, calling out a few problems for review. 
2) Use Subtraction foldable to review doubles subtraction.

8) Go outside and use chalk to draw very large caterpillar. Inside the circles, have children write their numbers by 2's.

8) Outside draw boxes in a circle numbered 1-40. Have one child stand in the circle and bounce ball on the numbers that skip count by 5, then by 2.

 4) Tell the children we will be learning about descriptive words or adjectives. . Write the words, cat, dog, book and desk on dry erase board, leaving room in front of it. Tell them we need to put words before the nouns like shape, color, size, number, feels like, looks like, taste and texture and sounds like. Let them try this a few times each. 
5) Read Chrysanthemum. Have children draw a picture of Chrysanthemum on oversize construction paper.. Have them write on grade appropriate lined paper "Chrysanthemum is....." five times. Children will write adjectives to describe her. 
6) Go through story again, make three columns with Noun, verb, and adjective on top. Find words from the book to fill in the columns. Next, circle all Proper nouns and point out common and proper nouns. 


Thursday:


Math: 

1) Sing doubles rap. Go over addition foldable, calling out a few problems for review. 
2) Use Subtraction foldable to review doubles subtraction.
3) Sing multiplication rap. Go over multiplication foldable for review. (no example, we made it ourselves)
4) Go over division multiples foldable.

7) Make a Chrysanthemum poster. Let children think of adjectives that are nice to describe Chrysanthemum to hand on poster.
