Lesson Week: Three 1st-4th 2015-2016 school year.

Our third week of school for the fall will be September 21st-25th

This is our complete week-being a four day week and 30 min Friday morning:
Subjects included are: Geography, Spanish, French, Language Arts, Math, Science and Good Citizenship and memorization/copy work.

Monday:

Good Citizenship
Note: one of the few Texas homeschool requirements

1) Recite secular Pledge of Allegiance. 
2) Tell kids, "September is National Children's Good Manners Month. This week we are going to remind ourselves of good manners. Using good manners can help everyone feel comfortable and is part of being a good world citizen." 
a. Making introductions. Use this source by Emily Post to adapt to children's understanding. Have everyone practice making an introduction using different types of social situations. 

US Geography:
15 min
Skills This week: Review continents by size, review and learn US map, learn California facts. 

1) Using laminated world outline maps, say this rhyme while circling the continents, then name and circle the 4 oceans: (1 minute) 
Rhyme: Asia, Africa, North and South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. 
4 oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic
Map resource (1 min) 

2) Using laminated outline maps, learn and draw the states names with dry erase markers. (5 minutes)

3) Children will learn and chant California Facts. Teacher will pull out posters from a file folder of Texas where applicable for visual reference for the children. 
Learn and chant facts a few times. Have them point to areas on the map where appropriate or recognize posters. Be sure to have them point to bordering states, countries and bodies of water as well.

Math: 
1 hour

Skills this week. Review skip counting by 2's, 5's, 10's. number words, tally marks, odd/even, greater than-less than-equal than, addition and subtraction triple digits with no regrouping,multiplication, telling time with analog and digital clocks, place value and standard and expanded form to 100's. 

1) Morning review work: skip counting by 2,'s 5,'s, 10's. Students will write with dry erase marker on their personal boards as we recite these together . (3 min) 
a. Give everyone a counting chart. Write numbers 11-20 in word form on personal boards. Give 2 numbers that they will write the tally marks for, and tell if they are odd or even.  Give two number sets to decide greater than, less than, equal than. (5 min) 
b.Review equivalent time chart, then using the clocks on teachwithme.com, show the poster on page 10. Go over the vocabulary. Then, Using the clocks from teachwithme.com. Write three digital times on the white board. Students will use page 25 to fill in the answers. They can use their craft clocks to help. (save this worksheet to math notebook to fill in three every day.) (4 min)
c. As a class, we will do one double digit addition and subtraction problem. 1 single digit multiplication. For division problem use a double digit dividend and single digit divider with no remainder- written on the white board. For addition and subtraction children can use bear counters to solve, reminding the to get MORE for addition and Take Some for subtraction. For multiplication, they can solve by making groups, by adding bears into mini cups (mini cups are the groups) For division, they solve by figuring out what is the dividend---that is represented by paper plates with wide mouths drawn on and eyes for hungry people. Then they figure out the divisor( or number of objects to be divided represented by bears) They then try to give each hungry person an equal amount of bears to find the answer. Be sure to call each answer by it's correct term found here  (10 minutes)

4) Main skill: Writing numbers in standard and expanded form to 100's.  
a. Have children watch video on Expanded Form.
b.Teacher reads teacher script and lesson from expanded form lesson.

Spanish:
15 min

Skills we are working on this week:  Review of the basics, alphabet, numbers, colors, calendar. 

5) Go over teacher script the teacher script on page 11 for review.(we will watch episodes later on weekends when they are familiar with the terms. )Make a poster board using Vocabulary from day 2, on page 12) practice learning the parts of speech and the sentences 


Language Arts:

Skills we are working on this week: 
Spelling: Compound Word rules, two homonym words for a bonus treat. (a sticker on spelling notebook) 
Handwriting: Beginning cursive
Reading: Amelia, Amelia, Amelia-unit. Children will do character studies of these three very different Amelia's and how the setting and circumstances make them different and the same. Reading comprehension. 
Grammar: Idioms, Adjectives, homonyms, Capitals, Declarative sentences. 
Writing: Persuasive Letters.
 Note: Amelia Bedelia will feature a lot this year, including a reader theater play the kids will perform. 


Spelling
1) Show Spelling rule poster for Compound words.
a. Words are notebook railroad, postcards, anymore, bedroom, necklace, fingernails, toenails, and bonus homonym words berry and bury. (words are from new book)
b. Have children copy words into spelling notebook.
c. At the white board, ask how many syllables in each word, and where we should draw the line for the compound. (10 min)

Reading/ Grammar/writing

1. Show the cover of Amelia's Notebook; ask the following questions.
a. What is the title of the book? Does one of the names look familiar? 
b. Who is the author of the book? 
c. Ask to describe the book and predict what it is about. 
d. Ask if they think this is a different kind of book than Amelia Bedelia and Amelia's Road. 

2) Read the book through with no input or interruption. 

3. Take out the Types Of Sentences anchor chart. and read about the different kinds of sentences asking children to recall declarative sentences. Let everyone dictate a declarative sentence they could write in a notebook about themselves. 
 d. Then, go over how to form a question mark. Have everyone dictate an interrogative sentence they could write in a notebook about themselves.  (25 min) 


Handwriting

1) Give laminated worksheets for lowercase letter i, and u.  Demonstrate on white board, then allow them to practice with dry erase markers . (20 min) 

Science
1 hour

Skills this week: six week unit-Blood, guts and bones. Human Anatomy. Skin, Muscles and Bones portion of our unit.  
Note: This unit could take longer than six weeks-like 15 weeks. I will update this as I go. Following every days units, will be ideas and extra assignments since my 8th grader expressed an interest in this. 
Materials needed: books-links in lesson plans, as well as posters. 
*materials needed for experiments are found in the parent book, any extra will be with assignments. 

1.) Parent can prepare in advance by reading in Unit 7, chapter 25 pages 30-42 

2) Tell the children, "Trivia time! It's your body's largest organ.  An average adult's spans 21 square feet, weighs nine pounds, and contains more than 11 miles of blood vessels. What am I? Skin!" 
 a. Watch Bill Nye Video on Skin.
 b. Read student book pages 1-5
 c. Older students can copy definitions in teacher book page 3.

Memorization/copywork
Note: It's exactly what it sounds like. This is for subjects I find it important for my children to memorize, to enhance their education. Sometimes it is just memorization and sometimes it's copy work to help with the process.

2) Using this resource from humptybumptykids.com, go over telephone etiquette for kids. Get telephone numbers from a few families with children and with family for kids to practice after school. 

US Geography:

For multiplication, they can solve by making groups, by adding bears into mini cups (mini cups are the groups) For division, they solve by figuring out what is the dividend---that is represented by paper plates with wide mouths drawn on and eyes for hungry people. Then they figure out the divisor( or number of objects to be divided represented by bears) They then try to give each hungry person an equal amount of bears to find the answer. Be sure to call each answer by it's correct term found here  (10 minutes)

4) Main skill: Writing numbers in standard and expanded form to 100's.  
a. Write a few numbers on white board and have children practice expanded form.
b. This is not free but looks super fun! Minecraft inspired expanded form color sheet. Work as a class. 

Spanish:

1) Have children draw pictures of Amelia's notebook on manila pa. Brainstorm adjectives that describe Amelia, and write on the paper in marker. 

2) Write a few declarative and interrogative sentences on the whiteboard using this weeks spelling words. Leave out any capitals and punctuation. As a class, go over the sentences and correct them, ensuring they write the correct punctuation.

 Afterward, make 3/4 books to add to our collection.

1) Read Amelia's Notebook. 
a. Teacher prepares in advance by downloading and laminating Reading Comprehension charts. Use dry erase markers to fill in the charts as a class. 

2) On poster board, draw a Three Way ven diagram. Using our character trading cards and adjectives projects, compare and contract the three different settings for all the Amelia's books. Then, compare and contrast the characters on the other side. 

3) Give everyone a writer's notebook to celebrate the end of our first 3 weeks of school and let them decorate the first page with name and drawings.

Handwriting
